Great Road Trips of the USA

The USA continues to be a top seller in the UK tourist market and it is easy to see why with such stunning scenery, awe inspiring Canyons and some of the world’s most Iconic manmade structures. With so much to see, holidays in the USA tend to be multi centre itineraries, and one of the best ways to get around is by car on road trips, with the low cost of fuel, the plentiful supply of hotels and motels along the popular routes and reasonably uncongested roads (outside of the big cities), it all makes for a great adventure.
At Amity Travel we find the most popular self drive holidays to be to the Canyon lands and National Parks of the Western States and/or the Pacific Coast. Amity  Travel have been tailoring such holidays to suite your own personal requirements for many years and can not only save you time and money but take away all the stress of arranging such complicated itineraries.
With so much to see it is difficult to know where to start, for many the bright lights of Las Vegas are a fun filled introduction to the Wild West before heading off to the awe inspiring Grand Canyon National Park, the unique Bryce Canyon (Forest of Stone) is also well worth visiting and for many clients it turns out to be the surprise highlight. Zion National Park is another must stop with its towering red granite walls, the park has some fantastic nature trails where you may catch site of a Skunk or ring tailed cat as well as Peregrine Falcons and Eagle. Whilst for something more unusual Death Valley, on the border of Nevada & California with its desert of streaming sand dunes, multi coloured rocks and waterfluted canyons will make for some great photo opportunities, there is also the chance to join a ranger on a tour of the historic mining sites and sun drenched salt flats. Further north and a park that fits in well with San Francisco and the Pacific Coast is Yosemite National Park and the legendary Giant Sequoias, just 3 hours east of San Francisco, Yosemite is one of the best known parks and there is something for everyone here from stargazing and moonlight wildlife tours to rock climbing and rafting as well as Yosemite Mule Ride Adventures where you can enjoy the breath-taking views and majestic scenery of this incredible national park.
Depending on your time The Pacific Coastline has much to offer and can be added to a National Parks and Canyonlands self drive tour or as a standalone itinerary, starting with San Francisco; this is unquestionably one of the best loved cities in the USA. Home to the Golden Gate Bridge, Cable Cars, Alcatraz, Pier 39 and Chinatown, this city is instantly recognisable, Alcatraz is the major highlight for many and advance booking is always recommended. The drive south from San Francisco along state highway 1, taking in Monterey and Carmel, go whale watching off the Monterey Coast where Humpback Whales can be found from Spring right through to Autumn. Continue driving South taking in the stunning views of the Pacific coastal road known as the Big Sur, this is a great way to end or start your time in California, and don’t forget to visit a winery or two along the way with plenty of options in the Napa Valley just north of San Francisco and also at San Luis Obispo in the Central Coast Wine Country, north of Los Angeles.
You may well be thinking that such a full on itinerary is not going to be cheap, but it does not have to cost an arm and a leg either, with some great deals on flights outside of the school holidays and with a mixture of 4 star city hotels, National park lodges and motel accommodation a self drive itinerary can work out very reasonable indeed.
